Asphalt Guides & Cost Data

Practical, number-first guides on asphalt pricing, tonnage math, thickness standards, and materials, written to be checked against your own quotes.

Every guide runs on the same verified numbers as our calculators: 145 lb/ft³ compacted density, $70 to $130 per ton for hot mix at the plant in 2026 public bid tabulations, and coverage of 83, 55, and 41 sq ft per ton at 2, 3, and 4 inches. The guides cover pricing (cost per ton, millings, parking lots), the math behind ordering (the tonnage formula, coverage per ton, asphalt weight), and project decisions (driveway thickness, asphalt vs concrete, resurfacing vs replacement). Read the guide, then run your own numbers in the matching calculator.

Tar and Chip Driveway: Cost vs Asphalt, Lifespan & Problems

A tar and chip driveway costs about $2 to $5 per square foot installed, or $700 to $2,900 for a typical two-car driveway, according to HomeGuide. HomeGuide also puts it at 30% to 40% less than asphalt and about twice the price of gravel. Plan on 7 to 10 years from a single seal and 12 to 15 from a double seal. It suits long, low-traffic driveways on a sound gravel base. It is a poor fit if you plow often, want a smooth surface for bikes and strollers, or have a soft base.

How Much Does an Asphalt Driveway Cost? Prices by Job Type

An asphalt driveway costs about $3 to $15 per square foot installed in published cost guides checked October 2026. Paving with minimal grading runs $7 to $15 (Bob Vila, updated May 2024), and a replacement $8 to $15. A new 20 x 20 driveway costs $2,800 to $5,200 and a new 1,000 square foot driveway $7,000 to $13,000. The asphalt itself is only $1.27 to $2.36 of each square foot.

Best Time to Pave a Driveway: Seasonal Timing

The best time to pave an asphalt driveway is late spring through early fall, when the surface is above 50°F and rising and the ground beneath it is dry and settled. But "50 degrees" is a simplification of a specification that actually varies with how thick the layer is, and the shoulder months at either end of the season are easier to book.

Cold Mix vs Hot Mix Asphalt: Cost, Durability, and When to Use Each

Hot mix asphalt is the permanent material: it arrives at 275 to 300°F, needs a paver and roller crew, and builds surfaces that last 15 to 20 years, and up to 30 with care. Cold mix works at air temperature straight from a bag or stockpile, which makes it the right material for pothole repairs and winter fixes, and the wrong one for anything structural.

Asphalt Driveway Sealcoating Cost: What You Actually Pay

Professional sealcoating of an asphalt driveway runs about $355 to $800 for a typical 400 square foot driveway. Fixr puts the national average at $468, in a range of $355 to $600, and HomeGuide lists $400 to $800, or $1 to $2 per square foot. Some contractor-published prices run lower, because many crews work to a minimum charge of about $150 to $200. The sealer itself is the small part of the bill, at about $0.13 to $0.26 per square foot for two coats. Rates of $0.15 to $0.30 per square foot are commercial parking lot rates and do not describe a driveway.
